Cancer Care
We help people through all stages of cancer. Before treatment we help people to be in the best condition to cope with the demands of treatment. During treatment we help to manage and relieve the side effects. After treatment we help people to recover and move forward positively. For advanced cancer we help to extend the duration and the quality of people’s lives.
Our bespoke exercise and nutrition prescription is focussed on client safety, confidence, energy levels, quality of life, physical strength, motivation and support.
We adapt exercise sessions during chemotherapy to ensure clients leave feeling significantly better than when they arrived. During this time we focus on increasing oxygen levels and blood flow, improving energy levels and removing toxins to reduce the side effects of treatment.
Case Studies
Andrea
In April 2018 Andrea was diagnosed with HER-2 positive breast cancer. Fortunately, this was detected early in stage one, however she still went through both a lumpectomy and then a hysterectomy. In that moment that she was diagnosed Andrea said she became overwhelmed by the amount of questions she thought she should ask but she couldn’t think of the right ones. Although she had an understandably emotional reaction initially, thinking “why me?” she said she never hit an extremely low point and always kept a level of optimism throughout.
When talking to her cardiologist about the treatment she was about to receive he said one of the medications would potentially affect the function of her heart and so he referred her to CP+R. Although Andrea had previously had different personal trainers in the past, she describes the start of her CP+R journey, just four months after her diagnoses, as a shock as she was so impressed by the amount of detail, care and science that goes into the programme and fully appreciated the clinical support offered.
In addition to reducing the amount of strain her medication had on her heart, she also felt the support and training received helped her improve her energy levels through treatment and also to control her blood sugar levels that were in the “pre-diabetic” range and to moderate the weight gain that was predicted to occur with her prescribed steroids. Andrea has since come so far and now uses exercise as a way to manage the stressors she faces day to day.
Vim
We started helping Vim in late 2015 following a referral from her consultant cardiologist.
Vim was diagnosed with large B cell lymphoma. Interestingly, Vim found her way to us via a specialist cardiologist, as one of the side effects of her cancer treatment was an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
Our exercise prescription for Vim required careful monitoring to take her treatment cycles into account. The team had to consider Vim’s energy levels during treatment as well as her risk of infection when taking her exercise sessions. Tailored aerobic exercise was used to boost energy levels and provide natural protection against the cardiotoxic effects of chemotherapy. Vim’s nutrition and activity levels outside of CP+R were also closely monitored to ensure they complemented her structured exercise.
Vim’s main goal was to increase her confidence and hope for the future. The motivation, encouragement and support provided by her clinical exercise specialist was integral to her achievements.
Vim placed her trust in our entire team to provide the best plan for her throughout her treatment and into recovery.
